The mountains of Snowdonia, the Lake District and Scotland offer some of the best mountaineering in the world. Whether your interests lie in summer, winter or both, our courses can offer you instruction or simply an exciting and memorable experience in the mountains.

Our professional Mountaineering Instructors will involve you fully in all aspects of your course. They will include you in the "on-the-hill decision making process" helping you to develop your own mountaineering safety judgements.

summer and winter mountaineering skills

The high mountains of Britain are unique and individual, each requiring different techniques to climb them. Our mountaineering skills courses are designed to teach you all basics you require.

Working with a professional Mountaineering Instructor at a 1:4 ratio, you will receive instruction and coaching whilst on the mountains, which will help you put these new skills safely into context. During the course your, instructor will be able to tailor the daily course content to suit your personal experience and ambitions.

mountaineering skills - summer
During these breaks you will be instructed in mountain navigation, route planning, accident procedure, movement on steep ground and scrambling. At the end, you will want to put your pack on your back and head for the hills. These courses are instructed by Professional Mountain Instructors who have a vast amount of experience to share with you.
No. of Days Instruction: 2 and 5 day courses
Ratio: Up to 4 people per instructor.
Previous experience: Summer hillwalking experience, good level of personal fitness.

mountaineering skills - winter
Based in Scotland, these courses will introduce you to the skills required to move safely and efficiently through the mountains in winter. Topics covered will include winter navigation, use of the ice axe and crampons, route choice, snow stability assessment, use of rope and basic winter scrambling.
No. of Days Instruction: 5
Ratio: Up to 4 people per instructor.
Previous experience: Summer hillwalking experience, good level of personal fitness.

mountain navigation

Going out into the mountains at any time of year can be dangerous. However you can reduce the risks by attending a professionally run navigation course, which will give you the skills necessary to make the most of the British countryside.

Cirrus Outdoor will encourage and train you to develop these skills during one of our navigation breaks. The Instructors on these courses hold the Mountain Instructors Award and have several years experience of navigating in wilderness areas around the world in both summer and winter.

mountain navigation - getting started
During this short break, we will provide instruction in basic mountain navigation to include map orientation, use of a compass and the correct use of time and distance. You will leave this course equipped with all the skills needed to go out and explore the hills with confidence.

mountain navigation - improvers
This is for the person who has a basic understanding of navigation and wants to master the skills necessary to be competent in the mountains in all weather conditions. The course will cover advanced navigation techniques including contour recognition.
